Buy for the window, then check the hose
For a sliding or hung window, start with the AC maker’s compatible rigid window kit. For a hinged window, choose a fitted rigid insert for regular use or a correctly sized fabric seal for a short season. Reuse the supplied kit if it fits well. A higher price does not fix the wrong shape.
The goal is simple: close the open space around the hose while letting the AC vent as designed. A mosquito trap cannot repair that opening. CDC recommends sound window screens and air conditioning when available as part of keeping mosquitoes outside.

This guide is for a portable AC that sits on the floor and vents through a hose. If the machine sits in the window, use our window-unit foam and side-panel guide.
The current kit leaves a gap, has failed edges, or cannot fit the window.
The supplied parts can be refitted correctly, or the problem is a different open door or window.
Three ways to close the opening
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways.
| Design | Best fit | Pros | Reasons to skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatible rigid slider kit | A hung or sliding window within its size range | A defined hose mount; can reuse supplied parts | Too short, wrong connector, or a hinged opening it cannot close |
| Fabric zipper seal | A supported hinged or tilt window used for a short season | Packs away small; often avoids cutting a panel | Adhesive is not allowed, hose fit is poor, or frequent opening pulls the seal loose |
| Made-to-fit rigid insert | An awkward opening used often | Can match the frame and connector; tidy finish | Higher budget, careful measuring, and storage space needed |
Whynter describes both custom panels and fabric kits for casement windows. It also warns that many fabric kits do not fit its hose-in-hose models. That is why “universal” is not enough to approve a purchase.

For a premium setup, pay for documented fit, secure mounting, replaceable seals, and a usable closure plan. A thick sheet with a poorly placed hole can be less useful than the correct basic kit.
Make a six-part fit note
- AC model: photograph its label and the supplied connector.
- Window action: does it slide up, slide sideways, swing, or tilt?
- Usable opening: measure the actual mounting area, not the outside trim.
- Mounting depth: note tracks, handles, hinges, screens, and locks in the way.
- Hose fitting: record its shape, tabs, and outer size, plus how many openings it needs.
- Daily access: decide how you will close the window, clean it, and remove the kit.
A 36-inch opening with a kit that reaches only 32 inches leaves a 4-inch shortfall. Do not bridge that with a loose flap of tape. Look for a maker-approved extension or a correctly sized panel. This is a fit example, not a cutting pattern.
For fabric, trace the route shown in the measuring diagram. Some dimensions refer to the seal’s path around the sash. They do not mean that a window of that width will fit. Check the depth of the opened gap too.
Room size is a separate choice. A 120-square-foot bedroom and a 250-square-foot office could use the same window kit if the openings and hose fittings match. Their cooling needs may differ, but the kit does not have a mosquito coverage area.
Seal around the vent, not across it
Do not add fine mesh, a sock, an air filter, or a flap to an exhaust outlet without approval from the AC maker. An open-looking material is not proof of suitable airflow. The perimeter seal and the working air path do different jobs.
GE says an existing window screen can stay with its portable-AC vent setup. It also advises against extending the hose. Those instructions apply to that equipment; use your model’s own manual for the final setup.

Two round hoses, one large divided hose, and one single hose can need different panels. Compare a photo of the complete connector with the parts drawing. Matching only the nominal hose diameter is not enough.
If the original screen is torn, use the screen-repair guide for the screen itself. Do not solve that tear by plugging the AC outlet.
Budget for one complete opening
These broad US-dollar ranges are planning allowances, not current prices or quotes. They exclude the AC. Custom size, shipping, labor, and local availability can change the total.
Swipe sideways to see each allowance.
| Route | Planning allowance | Check for extra cost |
|---|---|---|
| Refit a sound kit | $10–$30 for permitted seals or small parts | Correct gasket thickness and fasteners |
| Fabric seal kit | $20–$60 | Replacement mounting tape and removal supplies |
| Compatible rigid slider kit | $30–$100 | Connector, extension piece, gasket, and cap |
| Made-to-fit rigid insert | $100–$300+ | Measurement service, fitting, shipping, and storage |
For example, a planned $40 kit plus $15 in fitting supplies totals $55 before tax, delivery, or labor. A planned $160 insert plus $25 in seals and hardware totals $185 on the same basis. Neither example is a product offer.
Spend more only for a useful improvement
For a week of cooling, easy removal may matter most. For several months in the same office, a fitted insert and replaceable gasket may be worth the higher allowance. For two rooms, price two complete window setups before buying spare fabric that still needs the same adapter.
Ask what is included. “Panel” can mean a bare sheet with no collar or closure cap. Check return terms before ordering custom cuts or trimming a standard kit.
Test the fit before making it permanent
- Read the AC and kit instructions together. Resolve conflicts with the makers before fitting.
- Lay out all pieces and dry-fit them. Check the window handle, lock, and hose position.
- Prepare the allowed mounting surface as directed. Do not tape over loose paint or a wet frame.
- Fit the seal without folding it into the hose opening. Follow the kit’s support and fastening method.
- Check every edge from indoors. Look for lifted corners and loose joints during normal use.
Meaco’s flexible-kit instructions attach the fabric to hook-and-loop strips and close the zipper around the duct. Its guidance also calls for a short, fairly straight hose route. Leave enough room to follow those instructions without pulling the window seal sideways.

For a rental, get the mounting method approved before buying adhesive or drilling. “Removable” fabric can still leave tape behind. If the window serves as an escape opening, have the proposed setup checked before fitting. Do not assume a panel or cloth seal is a child barrier or security device.
A trial fit should answer a practical question: can you use this room normally without tugging the seal loose? Keep curtains, furniture, and walking routes from interfering with the installation.
Plan for the hours when the hose is out
A neat panel with an uncovered hose hole is still an opening. Before buying, ask how the port closes when you remove the hose. A matching cap is useful only if it fits securely and you remember to remove it before vented operation.
The Whynter ARC-12S manual describes removing the exhaust hose and fitting its supplied fixture cover when storing the unit with the window kit left in place. That is a model-specific example. Your unit may instead require the kit to come out so the window can close.
Source: Whynter ARC-12S manual: window fitting and storage closure.
Do not use a storage cap while a cooling cycle can start, including from a timer or remote control. Follow the shutdown and storage steps for the exact AC. Label the stored kit pieces so the proper connector and fasteners stay together.
If you want fresh air with the AC removed, use a fitted window screen. A vent panel with an open port is not a substitute.
Watch for these failure points
- Edges keep peeling: review surface prep, adhesive permission, and tension before buying more tape.
- The zipper leaves a gap: the connector may need a different kit. Do not crush the hose to make it fit.
- The panel moves in wind: stop and correct the mount. A loose insert needs more than a cosmetic seal.
- Rain enters: stop using the faulty arrangement and have the weather sealing checked. Keep water away from electrical parts.
- The room still gets insects: inspect other entry paths before blaming the AC or buying a second device.
No kit earns a mosquito-proof promise just because it looks tidy. Recheck the corners after moving the AC, opening the window, or removing the hose. Small repeat repairs are a sign to revisit the design and fit.
Do not spray insecticide into the hose or cover the appliance’s working vents. For a persistent indoor problem, identify the insect and its source first.
Buy a second tool only for a separate job
If the window gap is closed but mosquitoes remain, review the bedroom trap guide. The Katchy format page explains a glue-board capture device; it does not replace a sound window seal.
If the problem is an ordinary hinged window with no AC hose, our casement-screen comparison is the closer match. Renters can also compare removable mosquito-control options.
Check water-holding items too. CDC advises emptying and scrubbing, covering, turning over, or discarding suitable containers each week. Keep that routine separate from the AC’s own drain and cleaning instructions.

Questions before you buy
Should I buy a rigid panel or fabric seal for a portable AC?
Start with a compatible rigid slider panel for a sliding or hung window. For a hinged window, compare a fitted insert with a fabric kit made for that opening. The best choice closes the whole gap and fits the exact hose connector.
Will a window kit keep every mosquito out?
No kit can promise that. Check its edges, seams, and hose opening after fitting. Other doors and windows may still let insects in, and a new seal does not remove mosquitoes already in the room.
Can I leave the existing window screen in place?
GE permits an existing window screen with its portable-AC vent setup. Check your own model instructions before doing the same. Do not treat this as permission to add a tight mesh sock over any exhaust hose.
Can I put mosquito mesh across the exhaust hose?
Do not add mesh, filters, or a flap unless the AC maker approves that exact arrangement. Keep the required airflow path clear. Seal gaps around the window kit rather than stuffing material into the outlet.
Does a universal kit fit a dual-hose portable AC?
Not always. Check the shape and number of ports, plus the full connector size. A hose-in-hose system may need a large shaped fitting that a fabric zipper opening cannot accept. Get written compatibility confirmation before ordering.
How do I size a fabric window seal?
Use the kit maker’s measuring diagram. A stated fabric length may describe a path around the opening, not the window width. Also check the gap depth, sash direction, hinge clearance, and space around the hose.
Does my room size change the window-kit size?
No. Room area helps with AC selection, but the window opening and hose fittings set the seal size. A larger room does not call for a longer fabric seal unless its window is also different.
Can I cut an adjustable panel shorter?
Only where its instructions allow it. Keep the hose opening and required fastener areas intact. Dry-fit the pieces before cutting, and check whether a cut part can still be returned.
Is a fabric seal a good choice for a rental?
It can be, if the window fits and adhesive is allowed. No-drill does not mean no marks. Ask about the mounting method, test the permitted adhesive on a hidden spot, and plan how to remove it.
Can I shut the window with the kit fitted?
Check the exact kit and window together. Remove the hose first when required, then follow the closure instructions. Do not force a handle against fabric, a panel, or a connector that is in the way.
What closes the hose hole when the AC is stored?
Use the model’s approved cap or remove the kit and close the window. The Whynter ARC-12S manual describes a supplied fixture cover for storage. Keep any cap off the airflow path whenever the AC requires venting.
How much should I budget for a window seal?
As planning allowances, set aside $20–$60 for a fabric kit, $30–$100 for a compatible slider kit, or $100–$300 or more for a made-to-fit insert. Add fitting supplies, shipping, and any labor. These are not live prices.
Is a clear rigid panel a security window?
No. Do not assume a removable insert, adhesive strip, or fabric seal prevents entry or a fall. Ask the installer about window security, child safety, and any required escape opening before choosing a mount.
Can I spray insecticide inside the AC hose?
Do not spray into the hose, appliance, or vents as a mosquito fix. Repair the entry gap and follow the AC instructions. If an indoor pesticide is needed elsewhere, use only a product labeled for that place and follow its directions.
Should I buy a trap instead of fixing the seal?
Fix a known entry gap first. A trap does not close it. Consider a separate capture tool only for the problem that remains after checking screens, doors, and water-holding items.
What if a new seal leaks or peels?
Check the mounting surface, size, hose support, and assembly instructions. Stop using a setup that lets rain reach electrical parts. Ask for a compatible repair or return instead of layering more tape over a failing fit.
